volunteered in St. Lucia, South Africa for African Impact, 2010

where to next....

in the 7% - that's where I want to be

Written By Regina Brett, 90 years old, of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland , Ohio.

"To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me. It is the most-requested column I've ever written"

My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.

5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.

8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.

9. Save for retirement starting with your first pay cheque.

10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.

13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.

15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.

16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.

19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else

20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.

21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.

23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.

24. The most important sex organ is the brain.

25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.

26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?'

27. Always choose life.

28. Forgive everyone everything.

29. What other people think of you is none of your business.

30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.

31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

33. Believe in miracles.

34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.

35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

36. Growing old beats the alternative - dying young.

37. Your children get only one childhood.

38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.

41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

42. The best is yet to come.

43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

44. Yield.

45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift."

Its estimated 93% won't read this weekly. If you are one of the 7% who will, give it to a friend with the title '7% List'.

I'm in the 7%.

Pretty cool.

Thinking about College

I'm posting this link so that when I start along this path with Jack I can refer to it!

Does It Matter Where You Go to College?

Friends

Life is too short to wake up with regrets. So love the people who treat you right. Forget about the one's who don't. Believe everything happens for a reason. If you get a second chance, grab it with both hands. If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it. Friends are like balloons: once you let them go, you can't get them back. So I'm gonna tie you to my heart so I never lose you. Send this to all your friends including me and see how many you get back. If four balloons are returned to you, something you have been waiting for a long time will happen!!!! Send a lot of little balloons! It can be worth it to see how many friends don't wanna let you go.

Bailey's all grown up....

...she wants to sleep in the livingroom in front of the wood stove and not on the floor next to my side of the bed.

Twirling

Twirling
by A.S.

My mom has an obsession
She was born twirling her hair
I look around its twirl, twirl everywhere
In the car, in front of the TV, reading or writing
I guess it’s exciting
It’s very aggravating in many ways
Again and again days after days
I tell her to put her hand down
But she does have the crown
It is her own hand
So I will stop my demand
Does your mom do something annoying
I’m sure or else she would just be plain old boring

6 Hours of Motherhood

6 hours?
Medal ceremony for Scott - tournament winning team!!,
Back to house,
Helped Mom make 5 beds,
Packed bags,
Packed car,
Made sandwiches for road trip,
Waving Goodbyes,
Got gas,
Bought a scratch off lottery,
Had Scott scratch off (I am always bad luck!),
Collected $15 winnings,
Hit the road back to VT,
Paid for car behind me in first toll (even though, at the time, there wasn’t one),
Paid for car behind me in second toll (they were behind me in red car),
Watched red car pass me without even looking my way – even though I paid their toll,
Pondered the random kindness to strangers – one of my 52 in 2010,
Fought to stay awake,
Watched Scott sound asleep...twitching,
Came up with more business ideas,
Acknowledge that I really do my thinking while driving,
Usual beautiful views hindered by smoke from CA wildfires,
Went food shopping,
Finally home,
Got the most amazing/grunting welcome home greeting from Bailey!,
Watered plants that looked dead,
Quickly did the rounds - peonies open, daisies, 15 poppies on ONE plant,
Note to self: photograph flowers tomorrow,
Unpacked car,
Unpacked/put away groceries,
Made dinner,
Did dishes,
Cleaned kitchen,
Unpacked bags,
Started laundry,
Poured glass of wine,
Checked email,

And that was only the past 6 hours.

Anna meets Nolan Kasper

Nice things @ Cotton

I was just cleaning up and found this envelope full of tiny pieces of paper and they were all full of nice things about S:

"is cool, is always nice and sets a good example"

"I appreciate how you always keep me in line - and can always make me laugh"

"I appreciate how you are nice and make me laugh"

"He can always put everything in a funny way. Funny kid. It's really cute!"

"I appreciate your weird laugh."

"That you make me laugh and always have a good time."

"I appreciate how you're so funny & always find some way to make the class laugh."

"Nice person."

"I appreciate that is really funny and nice."

"is cooler than cool."

"If your in a sticky situation he can help you out."

Bib 13

This morning, we pulled into the lot for a ski race. And as we were getting out the skis, she said, "Mom, wouldn't it be really cool if I got bib 13 today?". Yes, I said, but I think we both knew the chances of that were slim to none.

See below. Need I say more?

Just read the Sunday Times - and read a great article about new majors in college - had to write the shortened list so I won't forget:
  1. Narrative Medicine (connecting lit & medicine)
  2. Homeland Security
  3. Cyber Security
  4. Urban Environment (sustainability)
  5. Cultural Sustainability (social justice & sustaining communities)
  6. Education Leadership
  7. Energy Systems Engineering (cars)
  8. Construction Management
  9. Specialized MBA (pick your thing!)
  10. Social Networking (media)

Hmm....wonder what these will be next year?

  3. eat slowly
  4. eat the right foods
  5. don't get on my scale everyday
  6. exercise more
  7. go to bed earlier
  8. FLOSS daily!
  9. lift weights
  10. stop to smell the roses - relax!
