the day after - what cgpt said

Donald Trump's victory in the 2024 presidential election, despite his legal and impeachment history, reflects a combination of strategic campaigning, powerful alliances, and strong turnout from his base. Trump's campaign, led alongside running mate J.D. Vance, effectively mobilized key demographics and regions. His messaging included promises of deportations, tariffs, and rollback of environmental and social policies, which resonated in economically distressed areas and with certain segments of the electorate.

One pivotal factor was the influence and resources of high-profile supporters like Elon Musk. Musk endorsed Trump and used his platform, X (formerly Twitter), as a substantial campaign tool, donating significant amounts of money and mobilizing a wide-reaching network of influencers. These endorsements tapped into a younger male demographic and amplified pro-Trump sentiments through popular podcasts and online content.

Additionally, Trump's campaign capitalized on disillusionment with the current administration among some voters, particularly those dissatisfied with economic challenges and seeking a change in leadership. His strategic focus on battleground states like Georgia and Pennsylvania, which he managed to flip, proved crucial in securing the presidency.

Despite ongoing controversies and legal battles, Trump's appeal among his core supporters and the strategic amplification of his message across digital and social media platforms played a decisive role in his electoral success

Eels

when you have a new found passion and interest with eels and you learn about a new book the day it's released from this Boston Globe article -
In a new book, Ellen Ruppel Shell studies the slippery beasts of Maine and the 'eel people' they've snagged
The science journalist and former Boston University professor discusses eels as both a commodity and a mystery

and of course I had to order a copy:

Bill

I just found out that Bill Mares died yesterday (7/30). He and I were on the Digger board and just had coffee together on June 18th. He also wrote me this email three days ago that I only saw today.

to me
Dear Louisa, I want to thank you for the honor of serving with you on the Digger board.  It was like being a fellow at the Adlai Stevenson Institute with the likes of David Halberstam and Murray Kempton. I can't say this any better than Pericles.  I apologize for the sexist tone, but it was written 2500 years ago.
I am soooo sad. He was such a wonderful man. He was also a good friend of John's.

He and David Goodman had one final conversation.

Heavy, heavy heart.

I miss her!

Driving back from Montreal yesterday

Holocaust Museum

If you find yourself in Amsterdam, I highly recommend spending some at the recently  opened Holocaust Museum. The NYTimes has also had several stories about it as of late.

The Dutch lost more than 104,000 Jews in WWII - almost 3/4 of the Dutch Jewish population. Yet they never had a museum to devoted to these atrocities. Not until March of this year.

The first photo ended up on the cover of a magazine and it was how a Mom found out that her son, that young boy, was still alive. She thought he had died.

Very powerful and well done.

5/24 HBD Jack

To my dear Jack, my firstborn delight,
From baby days calm to a future so bright.
You were easy and sweet, with a heart full of gold,
Now grown and successful, a wonder to behold.

Stubborn at times, but with thoughts so profound,
In you, my dear Jack, such wisdom is found.
With Issy beside you, love's light brightly beams,
Together you flourish, pursuing your dreams.

Thoughtful and smart, and so handsome too,
Jack, my dear son, all my pride is in you.
On this special day, my wishes are clear,
May your journey be joyful, year after year.
