Bill

I just found out that Bill Mares died yesterday (7/30). He and I were on the Digger board and just had coffee together on June 18th. He also wrote me this email three days ago that I only saw today.

to me
Dear Louisa, I want to thank you for the honor of serving with you on the Digger board.  It was like being a fellow at the Adlai Stevenson Institute with the likes of David Halberstam and Murray Kempton. I can't say this any better than Pericles.  I apologize for the sexist tone, but it was written 2500 years ago.
I am soooo sad. He was such a wonderful man. He was also a good friend of John's.

He and David Goodman had one final conversation.

Heavy, heavy heart.

I miss her!

Holocaust Museum

If you find yourself in Amsterdam, I highly recommend spending some at the recently  opened Holocaust Museum. The NYTimes has also had several stories about it as of late.

The Dutch lost more than 104,000 Jews in WWII - almost 3/4 of the Dutch Jewish population. Yet they never had a museum to devoted to these atrocities. Not until March of this year.

The first photo ended up on the cover of a magazine and it was how a Mom found out that her son, that young boy, was still alive. She thought he had died.

Very powerful and well done.
